Lake Victoria Basin Commission(LVBC) Executive
Director Dr. Ali-Saidi Matano arrived in the Tanzanian’s wildlife-rich district
of Serengeti today morning to attend the 8th Mara Day celebrations.
“ It is exciting to see that people are now aware
of Mara Day , this is indeed
going to be wonderful event in Tanzania “, Dr Matano said shortly after arrive in Mugumu
town where the celebrations are taking place.
Dr Matano
said commemoration of the Mara Day brings together key stakeholders from
Tanzania and Kenya to discuss measures aimed at promoting sustainable
conservation in the Mara River Basin.
Mara Regional Commissioner Adam Malima launched the celebration
on Thursday afternoon.
The climax of the celebration will be on September 15.Held on September 15th each year, Mara Day incorporates a different theme to campaign for sustainable conservation of the Mara River.
The theme of 2019 Mara Day celebrations is : I, Mara
River- stand with me”.
The Mara River starts in the Mau
forests on the Kenyan side, and the flows through the Masai Mara Game Reserves
and Serengeti National Park before emptying into Lake Victoria in Tanzania. The Mara Day is hosted on rotational basis by the two East African countries.
Besides conservation , the celebration further helps to enhance the existing good relationship between the two East Africa countries.
The 10th Sectorial Council of Ministers for
Lake Victoria Basin held in the Rwandan capital Kigali in May 2012 declared
every September 15 the “Mara Day.
