Eight men including two North Mara Gold Mine workers
were on Wednesday brought before Tarime district court and charged with five
different counts, including economic sabotage and money laundering.
The suspects are accused of illegally entering the
gold mine pit and stealing gold sand valued at over 200 million Tanzania
shillings between September 22 -25 this year.
Two of the
suspects have been working at the gold mine, one as CCTV camera expert and one
as a truck operator.
In a related development, Deputy Minister for Minerals
Stanslaus Nyongo has warned that the government will not sit down and watch
while theft continues at one of the country’s largest gold mine.
“This is a syndicate and we are all out to dismantle
it. Those stealing gold from the North Mara gold mine must stop henceforth, “the
Deputy Minister told journalists in Tarime on Wednesday evening.
