Govt underscores its role in boosting performance of NGOs

Vice-President Dr. Philip Mpango has underscored government’s role in enhancing the freedom of non –governmental organisations in the performances of their day-to-day duties.


He has said that it is apparent that NGOs have been playing a critical role in helping the government to improve the lives of people in the implementation of various development projects in such sectors as health, agriculture, education, water , good governance, environment and defence and security.


Dr. Mpango said this in Dodoma yesterday in a speech delivered on his behalf by the Minister of Community Development, Gender, Women, and Special Groups, Dr. Dorothy Gwajima, at the climax of a conference of NGOs.


He said among the steps taken by government to improve the working environment of NGOs include their electronic registration and the national strategy of their sustainability.


In his speech, the Vice-President was also heartened by the launch of a subsidy fund for NGOs and their participation in giving their views regarding the taxation reform system, among others.


On his part, the chairman of the council of NGOs, Jasper Makala, thanked government for its recognition of the contribution of NGOs towards national development.


Speaking at the same occasion, Mwantumu Mahiza, the chairperson of the Board of NGOs, said the organisations must carry national interest at heart if their contribution is to win public support.


Susan Namombo, the United Nations Resident Representative in Tanzania, said her organisation would continue to work with the Tanzanian government to enable it realise its 2050 Development Vision.


The key topic of the conference dwelt on the assessment of the contribution of NGOs for national development the 2021/2025 period highlighting achievements, challenges, opportunities and expectations.
