Prof Muhongo: Bring New Life into Our Oceans

Wednesday, 8 June 2022

The theme for World Ocean Day 2022 is: *Revitalisation: Collective Action for the Ocean*

Our five oceans cover 70% of the Earth's surface. They are from the smallest to the largest: the Arctic, Southern, Indian, Atlantic and Pacific.

Seawater covers approximately 361,000,000 sq.km.  of the planet Earth. Thus, oceans are principal components of Earth's hydrosphere, and therefore integral to life on Earth. They produce at least 50% of our Planet's oxygen.

Oceans are our huge heat reservoirs, consequently, they influence climate and weather patterns, the carbon cycle, and the water cycle.

This year's theme is a humble clarion call for us to work  together for our own good because it is estimated that 90% of big fish populations (source of protein) are depleted, and approximately 50% of coral reefs have been destroyed.

Please join the rest of the world to bring new life into our oceans, and to manage them sustainably.

*Sospeter Muhongo*

Former Chair of the Science Programme Committee of the UN-proclaimed International Year of Planet Earth (UN-IYPE)
