FORESTS PROTECTION ESSENTAIL FOR INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT

From a Correspondent in Arusha,

About  1,300 small and big factories directly dependent on forest products, the Managing Director of the Tanzania Forest Services, Professor Dos Santos Silayo has said .

He did not give an estimated figure of workers employed by those factories but said the number of workers was naturally sizeable.

Thus, he wanted   double efforts in protecting existing forests as part of the efforts to support the government’s industrialization strategy.

“The Tanzania Forest Services (TFS) oversees protection of 462 natural and 23 man-made forests.  As Tanzania industrializes, demand for forest products is correspondingly going up. Our ambition is to  increase forest acreage as we protect existing ones,” Professor Silayo said on early this week..

He mentioned some of forest products as power and telephone poles, paper, match boxes, marine board, plywood sheets and furniture.

Beekeeping and vital herbal medicines also depend on forests.

Prof Slayo was in Arusha attending a scientific conference organised by the National Environment Management Council (NEMC).

TFS, he further explained, has consistently battled to ensure that forests and forest cover remains intact in the country.
