Tanzania set to become hub for production of heavy mining equipment

Tanzania is striving to become an industrial hub in Sub-Saharan Africa in the manufacture of various products and offering key services needed in the mining industry, it has been revealed.

The government is now attracting investors to build huge industries for manufacturing heavy machinery and spare parts to boost mining activities countrywide, Minister for Minerals, Anthony Mavunde, said in Dar es Salaam yesterday.

Inaugurating a  godown for selling spare parts of heavy equipment and  other mining tools owned jointly by an Indian company, Shan Parts Africa, and ITR company of Italy, respectively, Mavunde said  Tanzania invites both local and foreign investors to avail this opportunities in building heavy plants for manufacturing mining equipment.

“I congratulate the twin companies Shan Parts Africa and ITR for their decision to invest in Tanzania in the manufacture of spare parts and heavy mining machinery,” the minister said.

“The availability of these services in the country would reduce the importation of many spare parts from abroad and reduce running costs.”

He said mining is a key sector in the country’s economic transformation and that having industries that manufacture machinery and other equipment will accelerate the pace of its growth.

The government, according to Mavunde, has allocated Buzwagi area in Kahama district, Shinyanga region, as the emerging centre where heavy industries for mining equipment would be built.

Öur aim is to become the centre for distributing products and services needed in the mining areas in neighbouring countries,” the minister said.

Both the Indian High Commissioner to Tanzania, Bishwadip Ney and his Italian counterpart, Giuseppe Coppola, congratulated the existing tripartite cooperation between India, Italy and Tanzania in the development of the mining industry.as a catalyst for economic transformation.

Shan Parts Africa executive director, Malhar Dave, praised the existence of a conducive investment climate in Tanzania as a major attraction for his company in the decision to invest in the manufacturing mining machinery.
