A team of rescuers from the Barrick Bulyanhulu Gold Mine in Kahama district, Shinyanga region, has joined search operations at Nyandolwa mine in Shinyanga rural district where more than 20 small-scale miners were trapped underground following the collapse of a pit on Monday.
Bulyanhulu Gold Mine and its sister North Mara Gold Mine in Tarime district, Mara region, are both operated by the giant global mining conglomerate, Barrick Mining Corporation through partnership with Twiga Minerals, a joint venture firm with the government of Tanzania.
Both gold mines are dependable sources of Tanzania government revenue apart from supporting development projects in many social sectors to local communities where they operate.
On Monday a tragic incident occurred at the Shinyanga-based mine where 25 artisanal miners were trapped underground while on their normal business of seeking mineral wealth.
As rescue operations still continue in the area, Shinyanga regional authorities have reported that four miners have already been rescued while the rest 21 are still at large. One of the rescued miners is said to have died upon reaching hospital for treatment.
Deputy Minister for Minerals, Stephen Kiruswa, yesterday visited the scene of accident to mobilise support for rescue operations.
Meanwhile, President Samia Suluhu Hassan yesterday said she was saddened by the Shinyanga incident in a condolence message sent to relatives, and friends of the victims.
She ordered the Prime Minister’s Office and defence and security organs to ensure assistance is provided to teams engaged in the search operations.
