Biteko underlines importance of ICT in digital economy

Tanzania has vowed to continue giving priority to information and communications technology (ICT) to enable the country benefit from the emerging digital economy.


In Tanzania, the ICT sector has grown rapidly with no sign of slowing, extending beyond infrastructure investments to reshaping entire business models in the country’s industrial development.


Tanzania’s Deputy Prime Minister Dr Doto Biteko said yesterday that the government is mobilizing use of ICT to enable its youth compete in the current rapid global technological advances.


Inaugurating a programme on Digi Track sponsored by Huawei and Vodacom Foundation, Dr Biteko said in strengthening ICT education, Tanzania is building a skilled and innovative community which will immensely contribute to the digital economy.


He said the digital economy in the current global arrangement is of paramount importance to development in terms of increased productivity and labour mobility.


According to Dr Biteko, who also doubles as Minister of Energy, Tanzania is ready to ride the 21st century digital wave to reset the industrial-era development disparity. 


The country is inhabited by a population with a median age of 19.7 years and more Tanzanians have been wired on mobile phone services in sub-Saharan Africa since the early 2000s.


Tanzania’s Minister for Information and Communication technology, Jerry Silaa, praised Huawei and Vodacom Foundation for facilitating a unique model for the digital economy, which includes the integration of e-commerce, digital payments, logistics management and digital entrepreneurship training.


He appealed to the country’s innovators to empower to spread the Digi Track knowledge to the majority youth as a way of empowering to fully embrace what is known as the fourth industrial revolution empowered by digital connectivity.
