The leader of  Uhuru Torch Race 2025, Ismail Ali Ussi has commended Barrick  Company for stimulating Social and economic development through its investments in North Mara and Bulyanhulu gold mines.

“ Barrick is one of prominent investors  in the country. From the bottom of my heart, I would like to thank and congratulate the investor for making sure the nation  makes strides in development,’’ said Ussi when inaugurating the expansion of  North Mara water source project, last week.

He said the project which will cost a staggering 2.6bn/- from  Barrick North Mara,  through its CSR funds is one of the huge projects being implemented by the company, in support of the sixth phase government, aiming at attaining social and economic development.

The main goal of the project is to supply clean and safe water to residents in 11 villages surrounding the gold mine at Tarime District Council in Mara Region.

“ In actual fact, the villagers are happy and thankful to the sixth phase  government for the huge development projects,” he said , adding: “Today I inspected a CSR project of a village dispensary in Mangucha. And it’s not only in Tarime that huge projects are being implemented, Barrick has also constructed a modern market at Msalala in Shinyanga Region.”

Earlier, the Uhuru Torch entered Nyanungu ward in Tarime District Council where the race leader laid the foundation stone for a village dispensary at  Mangucha.

Mr Ussi commended Barrick for being exemplary in timely payment of CSR funds for the implementation of development projects in areas of its mining activities.

The Uhuru Torch Race leader also said the giant development projects are the fruits of cordial relations between Barrick and the residents in the surrounding villages.

He promised to be a goodwill ambassador of the good work by Barrick to the President, Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan.

“ I promise to be a goodwill envoy to Her Excellency President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan, and will bear a testimony to the good work of  Barrick,” he said and congratulated the President for putting in place a favourable investment environment.

On the other hand, Ussi commended the Rural Water and Sanitation Agency ( RUWASA) in Mara Region for  being good supervisors of water projects.

“ We have encountered no challenges since we arrived in this region . We are 100 per cent satisfied with the implementation of the water projects,’’ Ussi said.

Earlier, Acting RUWASA Manager in Tarime District, Eng. Mohamed Mtopa told the Uhuru Torch Race leader that the water source at North Mara was designed to serve 27,742 residents in four villages of Nyangoto, Matongo, Mjini Kati and Nyabichune.

However, due to an increase  in water demand in seven more villages surrounding North Mara goldmine, the water source was redesigned to serve a population of 125, 566 residents in the villages of Kewanja, Genkuru, Nyamwaga, Nyakunguru, Kerende, Msege and Komarera.

According to Eng. Mtopa, implementation of the project stands at 80 per cent while production has more than doubled from 2,314,000 liters to 10,213,000 liters of water, which fulfills the government’s target of  2020-2025 that aims to supply  safe and clean water to rural residents.

The water projects will help ease a chronic shortage of water to villagers, who will now engage in other development activities comfortably.

Barrick operates North Mara and Bulyanhulu goldmine in a partnership with the government of Tanzania, through Twiga Minerals.
