THE Tarime-based North Mara Gold Mine is the only mining centre in Tanzania where top leadership positions are 100 per cent held by local personnel, the government has disclosed.

Worldwide, the need to have experience due to technological advances has created legal procedures to allow indigenous Tanzanians take up higher leadership positions to replace expatriates as a deliberate measure of job creation.

North Mara Gold Mine, has been a notable example among mining companies for employing Tanzanians, according to the Minister for Minerals, Mr Anthony Mavunde.

The gold mine is operated by Barrick Mining Corporation incollaboration with the government of Tanzania through Twiga Minerals.

Mr Mavunde told journalists at a press conference held in Dodoma on Monday that the country's mining projects have seen an increase of local employees from 6,668 between 2018 to 18,853 in December 2024.

He said the government continues to expand the participation of Tanzanians in the mining sector through creation of a special investment zone at the abandoned Buzwagi Gold Mine in Kahama district, Shinyanga region.

With an average of 1,331, the special investment zone area will witness the construction of factories for the manufacture of basic tools required in the mining industry.

So far, Mr Mavunde said six factories have been built in the industrial area while 15 prospective investors have shown interest to build more plants.

The minister challenged the private sector to avail the opportunity of service delivery to the mining centres as part of fuelling economic growth.
