Tanzania has appealed to the World Bank to broaden the scope of its Programme-for-Results (PforR) financing to help the country’s water authorities undertaking development projects in the rural areas under the supervision of the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA).
PforR is a programme that helps deliver sustainable results and builds institutions as a financing instrument. Its unique features include using a country’s own institutions and processes and linking disbursement of funds directly to the achievements of specific programme results.
The World Bank has been Tanzania’s key partner in the implementation of the ambitious Water Sector Development Programme through PforR, according to the Minister for Water, Jumaa Aweso.
He said yesterday at the closure of a World Bank-sponsored nine-week capacity building training programme for water authorities that the Bretton Woods institution has played a cardinal role in supporting implementation of water projects in Tanzania.
The training, conducted in the administrative capital, Dodoma was attended by 40 experts, and dwelt on equipping the participants with skills in supervision of water projects as well as project write-ups, revenue collection and reducing water leakage, just to mention few.
Speaking at the same venue, a representative of the World Bank, Ruth Kenneth Walker, thanked the Tanzanian government for its cooperation in various projects, including those in the water sector.
She said good project write-ups were crucial for accessing loans from financial institutions, particularly commercial banks.
A participant of the training programme, Eng. Humphrey Mwiyombela, on behalf of fellow participants, said the course had come at the right time as the water ministry is implementing the third phase of the Water Sector Development Programme.
