Tomorrow is 13th Mara Day celebrations

Kenya will tomorrow host the 13th Mara Day celebrations at Sekenani town in Narok County. 


This year’s event will carry the theme “Flowing Forward Together: Conserving Mara Basin Ecosystem for Sustainable Biodiversity and Climate Resilience”, according to the Kenyan Ministry of East African Community.


The day is marked in September 15 every year on a rotational basis between Tanzania and Kenya as part of the efforts to campaign for sustainable conservation of Mara River. 


The river starts on the Mau forests on the Kenyan side, and then flows through Maasai Mara.


Without the ebb and flow of Mara River, the great wildebeest migration would cease to exist as its basin is the blue heart of Kenya and Tanzania supporting their economy and society.


Key activities planned for the event include a scientific conference, tree planting, exhibitions, and competitions.


Apart from supporting wildlife conservation, Mara River is also a source of livelihood to around.


Last year, Tanzania hosted the 12th Mara Day Celebrations in Mugumu, Serengeti district, Mara Region, where representatives of the two countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the trans-boundary water resources management for the Mara River Basin and the formation of the Mara River Trans-boundary water users’ forum.


The 10th Sectorial Council of Ministers for Lake Victoria Basin held in the Rwandan capital Kigali in May 2012 declared every September15 the “Mara Day.
