SpaceX arrives at the space station to rescue stranded astronauts

The SpaceX spacecraft sent to return two astronauts who were stranded at the International Space Station (ISS) has docked.

The Dragon, which has two empty seats for Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, docked at 5:30 PM Eastern Time (10:30 PM BST).

The two arrived at the station with a new Boeing Starliner for an eight-day mission in June but had to stay there due to a malfunction discovered during the flight. They are now expected to return to Earth in February.

The Dragon spacecraft was launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on Saturday with NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Russian astronaut Alexander Gorbunov aboard.

Hague, who has previously worked on the ISS, and Gorbunov will join the station's crew before bringing Wilmore and Williams back to Earth.

The mission was initially scheduled for Thursday but was delayed due to Hurricane Helene, which has caused significant damage in the southeastern United States, including Florida, in recent days.

Photos from inside the ISS showed Hague and Gorbunov smiling and taking pictures with other crew members after their arrival.
